This sports award will offer you a unique blend of exercise and fitness combined with Irish dance. It offers qualifications to enable students to contribute to the varied job opportunities that are available worldwide within the industry. Participants will study a combination of modules in the Sports and Recreation award that will prepare the learner to succeed in the Fitness, Wellbeing or Dance Industry. This programme includes modules Dance, Exercise & Fitness, Pilates, Massage Therapy, Anatomy & Physiology, Team Working, Nutrition, Sports & Recreation Studies, Gym Instruction ITEC, Workshops, Audition Coaching, Optional Extra Irish Dancing Grades.

Entry Requirements

In general you need to have a minimum of 5 passes at ordinary level in the Leaving Certificate or its equivalent.  Applications are welcome from students with Leaving Certificate Vocational, Leaving Certificate Applied or FETAC Level 4 qualifications.  Exceptions can be made where special circumstances apply on a case by case basis.  The Leaving Certificate is not a requirement for mature students and appropriate experience can be considered as meeting the entry requirement for most courses. You must be medically certified evidence of fitness to participate in exercise.

What Will I Study?

This programme includes modules Dance, Exercise and Fitness, Massage Therapy, Anatomy and Physiology, Team Working, Nutrition, Sports and Recreation Studies, Pilates, Gym Instruction ITEC, Workshops, Audition Coaching, optional extra Irish Dancing grades.

Career Opportunities and Progression

There are approximately forty Higher Education Institutions including Universities, Institutes of Technology and private colleges offering places on a range of courses to QQI full award certificate holders. Students of Irish Dance Exercise and Fitness can progress onto the BA in Performing Arts (LM026) at the Irish Academy of Music and Dance University Limerick.

Students can progress from this award to Institutes of Technology and Universities, including Dundalk IT, Carlow IT, UCC, Tralee IT, through the Higher Education Links Scheme on obtaining a full Award. See the full list of CAO courses available for progression here.
